“400 UHURU RISING, A Musical Journey to Freedom” is a live stage production commemorating 400 years of the African American experience from 1619 when Africans were first documented as slaves in Virginia, to 2019 as their 400-year history in America is formally acknowledged by the United States (HR 1242) and around the world
“Uhuru” means “freedom” in Swahili and 400 Uhuru Rising takes audiences on the African Americans 400-year journey to freedom through music, accompanied by illuminating historical narratives. Musical presentations are from three time periods; Negro Spirituals during the time of slavery, Gospel music during the Civil Rights Movement, and contemporary Jazz, R&B, Hip-Hop and Spoken Word. Each musical performance denotes significant moments in the African Americans’ 400-year experience being guided by the Shows Narrator.
400 Uhuru Rising culminates with portrayals of historically opposing characters crossing the “Bridge of Peace and Reconciliation” representing the spirit of peace, forgiveness and reconciliation that is available to ALL people seeking their freedom and dignity. A special presentation by the African Union Ambassador to the United States, H.E. Dr. Arikana Chihombori-Quao, concludes this historic event.
As African Americans continue to persevere and rise to freedom from mental slavery, 400 Uhuru Rising chronicles their important contributions to the tapestry of American and world history.
