Brenton Wood’s charmingly unpredictable phrasing and his infectious sense of good times made the smooth uptown soul of “The Oogum Boogum Song” and “Gimme Little Sign” into hits in 1967 and ever since, he’s been capturing audiences wherever he goes!
“The Oogum Boogum Song” reached number 19 on the R&B charts and number 34 on the pop listing. But Brenton Wood’s biggest hit came in September of the same year. “Gimme Little Sign” climbed to #9 on the pop chart and also #19 on the R&B charts. In the song gimme little sign is not actually sung, instead, the chorus repeats “Give me some kind of sign.” “Gimme Little Sign” was later covered by Danielle Brisebois who had a hit with it in 1994. “Gimme Little Sign” was also recorded by Ricky Nelson. “Me and You,” “Baby You Got It,” “18 With a Bullet,” and much more followed. He’s been selling out audiences ever since!
Signed by Berry Gordon as a teenager, Mary Holloway grew up fast at Hittsville, but with many of her tracks left on the shelf, she departed after one fine album and a flurry of excellent singles. As a songwriter, Holloway is best known for “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy,” a worldwide hit for Blood Sweat & Tears.
Holloway’s many hits include “Every Little Bit Hurts,” “Who’s Lovin’ You,” “When I’m Gone,” “Hurt A Little Every Day,” “Starting The Hurt All Over Again,” “Unchained Melody,” and many, many more.
