Bone Thugs-N-Harmony is one of the most successful 90s rap outfits to break into the mainstream. The group’s initial impact was astounding, even within a musical genre associated with a fast turnover of star acts. Their 1994 EP Creepin On Ah Come Up, featuring ‘Foe Tha Love Of $’, spent over 70 weeks on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart, and sold well over four million units. The following year’s E. 1999 Eternal went to number 1, selling over 330, 000 copies in its first week of release and subsequently becoming one of the bestselling rap albums of all time.
DJ Quik’s debut album featured the Top 20 R&B singles “Tonite” and “Born and Raised in Compton,” ended up climbing to Top 10 on the album charts, and was certified Platinum by the RIAA. Other hits include “Way 2 Fonky,” “Jus Lyke Compton,” “Dollaz & Sense,” “Safe + Sound,” and a ton more. DJ Quik has also produced songs for a multitude of artists.
During the mid-’90s, when West Coast rap reigned supreme, Mack 10 emerged as a close associate of Ice Cube and has since enjoyed considerable commercial success. Mack 10 has had a string of hits, including “Foe Life,” “On Them Thangs,” “Bow Down,” “Gaangstas Make The World Go Round,” “Backyard Boogie,” “Money’s Just A Touch Awa,” “Lights Out,” and more.
Hip Hop duo The Dogg Pound’s hits include “Let’s Play House,” “ Respect,” “Just Doggin’,” “New York, New York,” and more!
Suga Free began his professional rapping career working with DJ Quik, with Quik serving as the producer on his debut album, Street Gospel, released in 1997, which reached number 37 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
He made guest appearances on Xzibit’s Restless and Snoop Dogg’s Tha Last Meal in 2000, and released a second album in 2004, The New Testament, which peaked at number 72 on the Billboard 200. Just Add Water followed in 2006, described by AllMusic: “Just Add Water may not be the complete handbook to being a pimp, but it certainly is a kind of missive on the life of Suga Free”. The album saw Suga described as “charismatic and funny, with a rapid- fire-yet-conversational style” by the Chicago Tribune.
After a ten-year break, Suga Free released the album The Resurrection on May 5, 2019.
