The 2022 Grammy Winning Band Headlines The Women’s Image Awards. Featuring Hamid Saeidi, Lili Haydn, Itai Disraeli & M.B. Gordy with special guest singer Hengameh. Musical guests, Opium Moon serves as the centerpiece for two-hour film and television awards show. The works of Persian poet Hafez influence the group’s style of improvisation. “One of the most astonishing, deep & soulful music experiences in recent memory.”

In 2019, Opium Moon, these sensual and groovy collaborators stunned listeners with their Grammy winning debut album. How do our performing master musicians evoke the mysteries of the ancient world while remaining contemporary? That remains a glorious mystery indeed. These four Los Angeles-based artists: Lili Haydn (violin, vocals), Itai Disraeli (bass), Hamid Saeidi (santoor), and M.B. Gordy (percussion) know their way around a rich and cultured endeavor, creating diverse, substantial and absorbing song craft.

Hengemeh is a wildly popular Iranian pop singer whose musical talent and voice is said to have captivated the hearts of the Iranian people over night. Her quick rise to fame catapulted her to the top of the Iranian music industry, and allowed her to perform in countries all over the world. However, she has never been allowed to perform in her homeland – Iran. In 1979, after the establishment of an Islamic Republic in Iran, female vocalists like Hengameh were silenced as females were banned from singing in public or releasing music of any kind. As a young girl living in Iran at the time, Hengameh’s dreams of singing professionally were shattered. One of the final recollections she has of Iran after she fled and immigrated to Canada is from a night where she was at a small private gathering amongst friends. Upon encouragement by those around her, Hengameh started singing. Hengameh’s voice echoed through the home, and the sound of her friends applauding her echoed even farther. Hengameh’s voice echoed so far that night that a neighbor overheard the noise coming from this private gathering and called the police. The police raided the gathering that night. Hengameh was arrested and received a sentence of 80 lashes – all for singing privately to a group of her friends. Now, as an Iranian-American based in Los Angeles, Hengameh’s popularity has given her an enormous platform to bring attention to Iran’s first counter-revolution led by women. Women living in Iran are still defying and dying in an uprising that is historically unique for being centered on women’s freedom. After the recent brutal killing of Mahsa Amini at the hands of the Islamic Republic’s “morality police” widespread protests erupted. Now considered a ‘Berlin wall moment’, Iran’s women haven’t been this angry in a generation and the world has joined their efforts to shed Iran’s theocratic republic. Women’s Image Network is honored to present its Humanitarian Tribute to Hengameh for lending her platform to help liberate Iran’s women.
