Mississippi native Thelma Houston began her career in the 1960s singing gospel with the Art Reynolds Singers before signing with Capitol Records and scoring her first hit, “Baby Mine.” Her 1969 solo debut Sunshower, written and produced by Jimmy Webb, led to a move to Motown Records, where she topped the pop, R&B, and dance charts with her signature hit “Don’t Leave Me This Way.” The Gold record earned Houston a Grammy Awards win for Best R&B Female Vocal Performance, making her the first solo female artist at Motown to receive the honor.
Over the decades, Houston has appeared on major television specials, collaborated with artists including Chaka Khan and Mavis Staples, and performed worldwide—from the Hollywood Bowl to Las Vegas stages. A member of the Dance Music Hall of Fame and honored as an “Apollo Legend,” she continues to record and perform, including recent collaborations with Morrissey and dance producers Bimbo Jones.
Beyond music, Houston is a passionate philanthropist, supporting organizations such as the Human Rights Campaign, NAACP, and AIDS-related charities. Still performing around the world, she remains celebrated for her powerful voice, enduring hits, and commitment to both music and community.
