Prescott Niles is the founding bassist whose unmistakable playing helped define The Knack’s lean, melodic, and relentlessly propulsive sound. Before the band’s rise, he built a deep musical foundation recording with Hendrix associate Velvert Turner and spending formative time in London, sharpening a classic pop sensibility delivered with the punch of a seasoned live unit.
After their 1978 live debut in Los Angeles, The Knack quickly became a must-see act. Signed to Capitol Records in 1979, they teamed with producer Mike Chapman to record Get The Knack in just three weeks. Released June 11, 1979, the album became a cultural phenomenon powered by “My Sharona,” whose iconic bass line helped drive the single to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks and sell roughly 10 million copies worldwide. The album went double-Platinum, spent five weeks atop the Billboard 200, and also produced the hit “Good Girls Don’t,” cementing the band’s place in rock history.
Today, Niles carries that legacy forward as the driving force behind Prescott Niles’ The Knack, celebrating the classic songs that defined an era while introducing new music of his own—proving the spirit and sound that made The Knack essential is still thriving.
