Henry Kapono Ka‘aihue has been at the creative forefront of contemporary Hawaiian music his entire career. From the groundbreaking island rock of Cecilio & Kapono in the 1970s and ’80s, to a prolific solo career that has produced more than 20 albums and earned a worldwide fan base, Henry has helped shape the sound of modern Hawai‘i. His music blends island roots, folk, and rock influences into songs that celebrate the spirit, culture, and lifestyle of the islands.
A gifted vocalist, guitarist, songwriter, and performer, Henry is known for his soulful voice, compelling stage presence, and enduring connection with audiences.
Henry first rose to national prominence as half of the legendary duo Cecilio & Kapono, the first Hawai‘i group to sign a national recording contract with Columbia Records. Their songs became anthems of a generation and remain beloved classics today. Henry continues to celebrate that legacy with his acclaimed “Songs of C&K” concerts while also performing his award-winning solo repertoire.
Over the course of his career, he has received 21 Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards (Hawai‘i’s equivalent of the Grammy Awards) and a Grammy nomination. In 2023 he received the distinguished “O” in Life Award from his alma mater, Punahou School, considered the school’s most prestigious alumni honor, recognizing individuals who exemplify service and contributions to their community and field. In 2024 he was honored with the prestigious “Aloha Is” Award, recognizing his contributions to community and culture through music.
Beyond the stage, Henry is deeply committed to supporting the next generation of Hawai‘i’s musicians through the Henry Kapono Foundation, which provides mentorship, education, and opportunities for emerging artists. Whether performing timeless classics or new music inspired by his lifelong home in the islands, Henry Kapono remains one of Hawai‘i’s most influential and beloved musical voices
